More silly fanart.

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Another day, another sketch practice. My friend Wonder Russell is filming a movie right now, so I figured I might as well do some fanart for the hell of it.
Here it is! Very Struzan.

Captain Blacktooth WIP

This is still WIP for the CGHub challenge, but I liked it so much I'm posting it now. I'll post a final too when I'm done. This one has been really fun. 3 hrs so far. Going for a rich storybook painting sort of thing.

Natalie Portman

I need to get back to photo studies, so here is tonight's. Natalie Portman, 3 hours.

Siege Towers

I squeezed Siege Towers in today - they rattle in from the edges with different sorts of cannons mounted on top. They also serve as defensive shields for any critters behind them - you'll have to fire over them to reach any hidden monsters, or blow them to bits.  They are multi-part, so you can blow off the wheels or sections of the tower, or just the cannons on top. Hit 'em hard enough if they are on a slope, and you can tip them over, too! A powderkeg works nicely to blow out the wheels.

Monster Tower!

Switching gears a bit, for the last two or three weeks or so, I've been working on a little iPhone/iPad game in my spare time.

Monster Tower! ( at least for now )

For lack of a better description, it's like a bizarre mix of Plants Vs Zombies and Angry Birds - you have until nightfall to build a structure around your chickens and defend them from hungry monsters. You can build bricks, weaponry, and white chickens which produce golden eggs to fund your efforts.  It's all touch driven, so you drag bits of the world around, you can catch enemy spears and bombs in midair and fling them back at them, or hurl boulders, masonry - or even chickens! - to wipe them out. Completing levels earns you new types of tools to use, and new monsters with new abilities appear to challenge your defensive chops.

It's like an ultra-simple/ultra-strange/physics-based RTS that takes about 5 minutes a round.

It's really goofy, but weirdly enjoyable!

Here's a few screenshots and a video. Hoping to finish and release at some point on the App Store. Tell me what you think!

All artwork is VERY VERY EARLY! Expect pretty much everything to change - this is my first-pass 'programmer art' ;)

Cute and mean at the same time. Yowza!
A goofy CHOW submission ( Steampunk Aphrodite ), and a genie for the Disney Redesign challenge. Totally different painting approaches, obviously.
Hooray for variety!

Jafar Reimagined

This isn't really finished, but I'm not planning on going much further with it. Might as well throw it up here - this was an exploratory painting for the Disney Redesign challenge over on CGHub, but I was having more fun painting the genie, so I stuck with that and left this by the roadside. Still, it was sort of neat.

Been working on trying to put together an actual scene that tells some sort of story, as opposed to some guy in space with no context, which has been fun.

Warrior of Aries

Here's my CHOW submission for this week - I learned a ton with this one, and spent considerably more time developing it than previous CHOW submissions.  This week my focus was on painterliness and light, and use of color - trying to evoke the feel of some classic oil and acrylic painted fantasy art ( Frazetta, Easley, Elmore, etc. ).  I had lots of missteps and adjustments along the way, but it was a really enjoyable process overall.

My CHOW entry for this week -

Monday, January 24, 2011

Need to get back to doing studies again.
Tonight it's Frodo. 2 hours.

I tried something different today - just a quick outline sketch for basic proportion and then I went right to color blocking. I didn't let myself use any soft brushes - only one hard brush.

I also stayed at 100% zoom and did as much detail as I could at that level before allowing myself to zoom in. I painted over the lines first thing and tried to look at negative space and color blocks instead of outlines.

I'm kind of happy with how it turned out. I think my favorite photo study so far.

Ugh, so swamped with work lately, I haven't had any time to post.
But a certain XBox 360 title will be released soon as a result, so I don't feel TOO bad.

In the meantime, here's a portrait of my nephwe from back around Christmas I forgot to post, and some goofy goatman I just wrapped up tonight.
